About Canadian Area Codes

Canada uses area codes within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), sharing the same country code (+1) as the United States. Canadian area codes are assigned by the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) and the NANP Administrator.

Unlike the US, Canada has no area code splits — all new Canadian area codes since 1992 have been overlays. This means 10-digit dialing is required for all local calls in major Canadian cities.

Ontario and Quebec have the most area codes due to their large populations, while smaller provinces and territories often share a single code.
